Buttonhole Sampler

initialed MIH,
Germany, dated 1788

new
sampler size: 4¾” x 5” • framed size: 6¾” x 7” • price: $2200

This is a fine little sampler which demonstrates the art of making buttonholes, which, along with darning, was one of the more practical skills taught to samplermakers.

Whitework decoration surrounding the twelve buttonholes. The maker’s monogram and the date are topped with a coronet, all worked in very tight cross-stitches.

Worked in silk on linen, the sampler is in excellent condition and has been conservation mounted into a late 19th century frame.
